OUR STORY

After working in the UK restaurant industry for over 20 years, Amanda (mother of two small children, lover of Africa but missing the bright lights and big city of London) started on an ice cream making adventure to keep herself busy and out of mischief.

Working from her kitchen at home in KZN, she made small batches of velvety smooth ice creams and lucious sorbets that celebrated the local flavours of Kwazulu Natal.

The ice creams were so good she was convinced they should be made available to the public, so every Saturday morning, she packed up her car and went out to sell it by the scoop at local markets.

Scoop was born.

We quickly started to get a name for ourselves and wanted to make the best tasting ice cream that we possibly could, which called for the very best ingredients. Our vanilla ice creams contain real vanilla seeds from Madagascar, we melt the very best 70% chocolate into our base for our chocolate ice creams and our sorbets and fruit ice creams are made using real fruit, locally sourced and in season as much as possible; no artificial flavourings or colourants.

Our milk and cream are delivered twice weekly from JERSEY COW and our eggs are free range.

Our early days were spent at the beautiful Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock, where we lovingly manufactured ice cream in front of our customers in an open-plan kitchen and retail unit. When we were offered a prime spot at The Market, Ballito Lifestyle Centre, we couldn’t refuse and bid a sad farewell to our first home.

Our flagship store opened in November 2017 at Ballito Lifestyle Centre and has become a firm favourite with locals and holiday makers. You’ll find us on the corner of The Market, opposite Mica. This pretty store has been featured on Top Billing, CNN and has been used as a backdrop for some of South Africa’s leading companies in their marketing campaigns.

There’s plenty of space to sit down to eat or you can take your treats with you if you are joining in with other festivities that are happening in The Market.

Our second store on the corner of Florida Road and Currie Road opened in July 2019 and is in the hub of trendy and historical Durban. We are just behind Lupa on the new roundabout on Florida Road and there’s plenty of places to park on Currie Road.

This space was designed with fun in mind and has a window that opens out onto the street where you can eat your treats and watch the world go by. We have indoor and outdoor seating areas and always have at least 13 flavours of ice cream on offer, as well as our gourmet milkshakes, Scoop Rolls and crispy Hong Kong waffles.

Our factory is in the heart of Ballito Business Park – 3 The Stones, Ballito Business Park.

OUR PRODUCTS

As well as our delicious ice creams and sorbets, hand made vanilla sugar cones and pre-order ice cream cakes, in store you’ll find crispy Hong Kong inspired bubblewafles, gourmet milkshakes and Thai inspired Scoop Rolls. You can also grab a 500ml tub of ice cream or sorbet to take home.

OUR TEAM

Our team is at the heart of our business and we are really proud of them! Our ethos is to train and promote from within, so all of the supervisors and managers you’ll meet at Scoop started as shop assistants without any previous experience, working their way up over the years through commitment and hard work.
